Stephen Mark Barchan studied composition with Richard Steinitz and Edwin Roxburgh, supported by the EMI Music Sound Foundation.
Amongst the organisations who have presented his music are Aldeburgh Music, BBC, LSO Discovery, Ostrava Days, Park Lane Group, Sounds New and Soundwaves Festivals at venues including Cineworld (Shaftesbury Avenue), LSO St Lukes, Snape Maltings, Southbank Centre, The Warehouse and Weill Recital Hall in Carnegie Hall. Performances of his work have been given by BCMG, Contemporary Consort, Endymion, Galliard Ensemble (former BBC New Generation Artists), London Sinfonietta and Psappha, along with individual performances by David Purser, Jane Manning and Peter Donohoe. As a conductor, he has worked with Azalea Ensemble, Birmingham Conservatoire Symphony Orchestra, Ensemble Firebird, Janacek Philharmonic Orchestra, London Sinfonietta Collective and Maverick TV/Channel 4 Television.
He has also worked as a music copyist for Faber Music, Samuel French, Schott Music and United Music Publishers, along with individual projects for Anthony Payne (BBC Philharmonic, Cheltenham Festival and London Sinfonietta commissions), Birmingham Contemporary Music Group and Tempo music magazine.
Recent projects have included commissions from Eye Music/Rawsthorn Fund, ensemble Musitonik, North London Collegiate School, Thursday Film Ltd. and a commission to write additional music for the television show The Fast Lane, broadcast in over thirty countries by Motors TV. His transcription of Five Miniatures by Howard Skempton (a suite of miniatures originally written for solo accordion, transcribed for ensemble) is published by Oxford University Press. In 2009, he was commissioned to write the score for the feature film A Closed Book (premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and based on the novel A Closed Book by Gilbert Adair, published by Faber and Faber) directed by Raoul Ruiz and starring Daryl Hannah, Tom Conti, Miriam Margoyles, Elaine Paige and Simon MacCorkindale.
During January 2012 he was featured artist of the month on the Dutch radio programme Dissonant (broadcast by RTV-Arnhem) and in July 2012 he was a featured composer at the King's Lynn Festival, where he also joined Festival director Ambrose Miller in a pre-concert talk about his music. In August 2012, he was a BBC After 2 guest and discussed his music with radio presenter John Foster for a live broadcast by BBC Tees. He is currently writing a new piece for violinist Irmina Trynkos and an ensemble work for eight players commissioned by Ayre.
