Asko Hyvärinen has studied percussion, music theory and musicology in Helsinki and Turku. He has studied composition with many leading Finnish composers. He has also attended composition master classes in Germany, in Finland and in France under guidance of Jukka Tiensuu, Adriana Hölzky, Helmut Lachenmann and Brian Ferneyhough, among others.
Asko Hyvärinen’s list of work consist nearly 80 compositions. His most important works are The Sound of Inevitability, music for piano and orchestra (2000), Spring Contours (2001) for 11 players, Erg/Hamâda (2003) for percussion soloist and chamber orchestra, A Lie Nation (2005-2007) for nine performers, Scelsius for sinfonietta (2008) and Musik des Vergessens for chamber choir (2011).
Hyvärinen’s works have been noticed and awarded in several competitions, as UNESCO International Rostrum of Composers in Vienna, the 2nd International Composers Forum, France, Internatioal PanAccordion Competition, Finland, etc. He has also received numerous grants from foundations such as The National Council for Music. At the time he is working with three years grant of The Finnish Cultural Foundation.
Asko Hyvärinen’s music has performed and broadcasted in Europe, Asia and America. He’s composition concerts have been held in Helsinki, 2011 and 2004 and at Järvenpää Sibelius Weeks Festival, 2002. As a drummer/percussionist Hyvärinen has been performed in all important jazz and ethnic music festivals in Finland during 80’s and 90’s.
Scelsius in five moments is dedicated to the memory of Giacinto Scelsi, the twentieth anniversary of whose death coincided with the composition of this piece. Though this work does not strive to replicate Scelsi’s distinctive style, certain connections with the Italian composer’s music are clearly discernible. The work also features a number of elements that are new to Hyvärinen’s music, most notably the overall form of the composition. The work is divided into five movements, each lasting between two and five minutes and each with a subtitle depicting the musical material.
