Formazione e studi: inizia lo studio del pianoforte a quattro anni e composizione a dieci con Akira Miyoshi presso la Toho Gakuen School of Music. Nel 1986 si trasferisce a Parigi per studiare composizione con Tristan Murail e per lavorare all’Ircam. Dal 1990 al 1991 studia con Luciano Berio a Firenze.
Concorsi: negli anni di studio riceve vari premi, tra cui il premio Viotti e il Japan Symphony Foundation Award per le sue composizioni, il Gaudeamus Prize alla Settimana Internazionale della Musica con il concerto per pianoforte Anamorphose (Amsterdam, 1987).
Impegni artistici e commissioni: una serie di commissioni importanti dal Giappone (Initium,1993; Wave Mechanics,1994; Echo Canyon,1995) hanno confermato il ruolo autorevole che riveste nel suo paese. Durante lo stesso periodo la sua presenza a livello internazionale è andata crescendo, le sue composizioni sono state eseguite in Gran Bretagna, Stati Uniti, Francia, Scandinavia e a cinque ISCM festival.
Dal 2000 ha ricevuto importanti commissioni da Radio France (Water and Stone), dall’Arts Council of England (At the Grave of Beethoven), dalla BBC Symphony Orchestra (Departure), da Joan Jeanrenaud e dalla Berkeley Symphony Orchestra(UrbanPrayer).
Attività creativa: i suoi lavori più recenti, come The Song of Songs, Night Bird e Metal Strings, sviluppano nuove direzioni del suo linguaggio artistico, usando le più recenti tecnologie. Training and education: where she started piano and composition lessons as a child. After studying composition with Akira Miyoshi and piano with Nobuko Amada at Toho Gakuen School of Music in Tokyo, she moved to Paris in 1986 with the aid of a French Government Scholarship to study with Tristan Murail and work at IRCAM as an intern.
Competitions: in 1987, she was awarded the Gaudeamus International Composers Award at the International Music Week in Amsterdam. She studied with Luciano Berio in Florence in 1990–91 with funds from the Nadia Boulanger Foundation and a Japanese Government Scholarship. In 1998 she was appointed as Co-Artistic Director of the Yatsugatake Kogen Music Festival, previously directed by Toru Takemitsu. In 2005 she was awarded the Bekku Prize.
Engagements and commissions:
her works have been performed by distinguished ensembles and orchestras worldwide, including the BBC Symphony Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Berkeley Symphony Orchestra, NHK Symphony Orchestra in Tokyo and Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France. Various dance companies, including the Nederlands Dans Theater, have also featured her music. In 2012, she was selected as a fellow of the Sundance Institute’s Composers Lab for feature film.
Creative activity:
Tanaka's love of nature and concern for the environment has influenced many of her works, including Questions of Nature, Frozen Horizon, Water and Stone, Dreamscape, Ocean, Tales of Trees, Water Dance, Crystalline series, and Children of Light.
Critical activity, teaching and study: she taught composition at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Karen Tanaka currently lives in Los Angeles and teaches composition at California Institute of the Arts.
