Formazione e studi: studia pianoforte, direzione e composizione al Conservatorio di Innsbruck e presso l’Università di musica e di arti drammatiche di Graz. Segue i corsi in composizione di Beat Furrer dal 2000 al 2004. Inoltre, si forma alla musica elettroacustica presso lo Studio UPIC di Parigi con Julio Estrada e Curtis Roads dal 1994 al 1995 e presso Swiss Zentrum für Computermusic di Zurigo nel 1997.
Concorsi: riceve il premio in composizione Musikförderungspreis della città di Vienna nel 2004.
Impegni artistici e commissioni: riceve anche un premio in forma di commissione dalla Erste Bank nel 2006, da cui ha origine Bunny Games, un brano che trova ispirazioni sia ludiche (BBugs Bunny) sia storiche (Scarlatti). Sue composizioni sono state eseguite a Zurigo, Parigi, Darmstadt, New York, Seattle, Grecia, Giappone e Corea da, tra gli altri, l’Orchestra Sinfonica di Berlino eil Quatuor Arditti. Bernhard Gander ha ricevuto numerose commissioni: dalla Konzerthaus di Vienna (Der Melonenbaum, 2000), dall’ensemble Klangforum Wien (Leim, 2004), dall’Ensemble Modern, dai festival Musikprotokoll, da Wiener Modern, dal festival Klangspuren Schwaz (Horribile dictu, 2007), dal festival Donaueschinger Musiktage (Beine und Strümpfe, 2007; nuova creazione, 2012), dall’Ensemble Intercontemporain (2012).

Il background di Gander è quello che un giovane musicista negli anni ’80 può essersi fatto. Gli anni sono quelli del revival e delle contaminazioni stilistiche, dove i tradizionali muri stilistici e spesso ideologici sono caduti e di lì a poco vedranno la fine degli scontri ideologici e vedranno crollare molteplici muri. Legato agli eroi, al cinema, ai cartoni animati, Gander si dedica a musiche per queste azioni sceniche e (ancora Garzia): “…
è diventato un compositore affermato che voglioso di approfondire nell'ottica contemporanea i temi dei fumetti, delle serie televisive e soprattutto di una delle sue più forti passioni (l'horror e il monster movie) si è dedicato ad una riproposizione intelligente delle tematiche citate: è chiaro che il problema di donare una colonna sonora con certe caratteristiche non fosse una novità, ma la vera novità stava nel fatto che forse nessuno aveva saputo esacerbare con chiarezza e con competenza moderna le musiche che avevano accompagnato questi eroi del cartone animato o del fumetto o del cinema.”
Al momento disponiamo di due CD di Gander: il primo Bunny Games il secondo è Monster and angels. Sono cd che si muovono in una fascinazione ludica il primo, introspettiva il secondo, ma – ci aiuta ancora Garzia – “con tanti punti di riferimento musicali che coniugano le impostazioni rigorose mutuate dall'idea accademica e spunti rinvenibili nel resto della musica.”
