Tung-Lung Lin is a Taiwanese composer who currently lives in US. He earned his doctorate degree in musical art at University of North Texas in the year 2000, with the major in music composition and the minor in music theory. His major teachers in composition are Phil Winsor and Stephen Andrew Taylor. This spring semester 2003, he taught music theory at Ping-Tung Teacher’s College and lectured on the music of John Cage and minimalism at National Sun Yat-Sen University in Taiwan.
Many Taiwanese names have meanings. From his name, “Tung” stands for the “east”, “Lung” stands for the “dragon” and the last name “Lin” stands for the “forest.” Lin’s music and art works covers genres in text music, conceptual music, art installations, instrumental works and electro-acoustic music. Many of his works are very philosophical. His orchestral work, The Heidegger Collection (2000), has five individual pieces that transforms five of Heidegger’s philosophical ideas into sounds.
Program Notes on Mirror of Time (1999) for tape
Mirror of Time is an algorithm composition. The original material contains 24 tracks of numeric data that were generated by the visual basic programming language. The numeric data were then brought into Music Sculptor, an algorithm composition software developed by Phil Winsor, for further algorithmic operation. The final result was mixed in Cakewalk.
Mirror of Time has two parts. Rhythmically the first part is exactly the mirror of the second part. Both parts meet at the mid point of the piece. In the first part every track plays a steady pulse on the same pitch based on the relationship of prime numbers. In the second part, the pitches were randomly distributed over a wide range. All tracks with the same numbers of notes begin and end at different time. The aural effects give an impression of temporal fugue.
