A Franco-Argentine composer born August 24, 1949 in Buenos Aires.
After studying music in Buenos Aires (1968-1975) and obtaining a DESS degree in psychology, José Luis Campana settled in France (1979) and completed his training with Betsy Jolas, Ivo Malec, Guy Reibel and Pierre Schaeffer. He followed the computer music cursus at Ircam, attended many masterclasses including those of Pierre Boulez, Brian Ferneyhough, Klaus Huber, Karlheinz Stockhausen and Iannis Xenakis. At the Accademia Chigiana in Sienna, he also followed the teaching of Franco Donatoni and Hans Werner Henze. He subsequently taught analysis and the performance of contemporary music at the Paris Conservatory and then at Musikene, the Higher Music Centre of the Spanish Basque country. In 1993 he co-founded, at the University of Orsay, Arcema, a workshop for research, creation and the teaching of current music, which he directed until 2008. He also organises masterclasses and composition seminars in France, Europe and South America. José Luis Campana composes works for chamber groupings and orchestra as well as mixed and electro-acoustic pieces. He is interested in folk music generally and oral traditions and studies their parameters. He has in this way constituted a reservoir of stylistic elements (tone-colours, rhythms, playing techniques, etc.) that he fuses, mixes and employs in his compositions. His works include Vox Faucibus Haesit (1984), Imago (1985), String Quartet no 2 (1987), Feelings / Once (1997), Asì (2000), Babel (2007).
