Tetsuji Emura was born in Nishinomiya, Japan in 1960. He came to the attention of the public when his Intexterior No.5 for orchestra won the First Prize in the 2nd Witold Lutoslawski International Composers Competition, Warsaw Philharmonic (Jury: Witold Lutoslawski) in 1992. In the following year, his violin concerto L’Intextérieur won an honorable mention at the International Competition of Composition to Commemorate the Semicentennial of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government (Jury: György Ligeti), and then the Akutagawa Award (Jury: Toru Takemitsu) in 1994. In 1998, Les Papillons de Lorenz for orchestra won the First Prize at the “9e Concours International de Composition Musicale pour Orchestre, Besançon 1998”. This work was premiered at the final round of the “46e Concours International de Chefs d’Orchestre, Besançon 1999” by l’Orchestre National de Lyon and was also performed in the opening concert of the ISCM new music festival in 2002 by Krzysztof Penderecki’s recommendation.
His music, characterized by rich timbres, has been performed at many international music festivals around the world, including “Schreyahner Herbst 2004”, “A Tempo 2003”, “Accademia Filarmonica di Bologna 2000”, “Ultraschall Deutschland Radio SFB 1999”, “Octobre en Normandie 1996”, “Fête en Metz 1996”, “ISCM World Music Days 1993 and 2002”, etc. During the 2000-2001 season, he was appointed as the resident composer at the Orchestra-Ensemble Kanazawa, under music director Hiroyuki Iwaki. At present, he is professor of composition at the College of Human Sciences, Kinjo Gakuin University, and lives in Yokohama, where is Japan’s historical harbour city near from Tokyo.
