Ryszard BUKOWSKI
Ciężkowice, 1916 – Wrocław, 1987

Polish composer and pedagogue. In 1939 he completed his compositional studies with K. Sikorski at the Conservatory in Warsaw. Between 1945-1948 he taught at the PLM in Katowice, in the years 1948-1951 he was director of PŚSM in Wrocław; from 1951 he lectured at the local PWSM. One fruit of his pedagogical experience was a textbook for teaching secondary music schools called „Metodyka nauczania form muzycznych” ("Methodology Of Teaching Musical Forms", Kraków 1968). In addition to composing and teaching activities, Bukowski was highly active in social organisation; as a long-term chairman of the Wrocław branch of the PCU he was the animator of musical life in Wrocław, and co-founder of the Polish Contemporary Music festival in the city. He worked with various kinds of music, preferring dramatic expression. Linearity dominates his style; in vocal pieces expressive melodic phrases, subordinated to the prosody of the text, are a measure of his micro-and macro-formal designs.
