Brotons studied flute with his father and did his musical studies at the Barcelona Conservatory of Music, achieving the Superior title in Flute, Composition and Orchestra Conducting. In 1985 he got a Fullbright scholarship and he moved to the United States where he received his Doctorate in Music from Florida State University. He has been a pupil of X. Monsalvatge and R. Johnson in Composition, and A. Ros Marbá and P. Spurgeon in Conducting.
From 1977 to 1985 he served as principal flute of the Orquestra del Liceu de Barcelona (opera orchestra) as well as being a member of the Orquestra Ciutat de Barcelona (1981-1985).
He has composed a considerable amount of orchestral, chamber and vocal pieces and has received numerous composition awards including the Spanish National Orchestra Award for his Four Pieces for Strings (1977), the Golden Youth Award (1980), the Generalitat of Catalunya Prize for his Second Symphony (1984), the Barcelona Town Prize for his Absences for orchestra (1986), the Southeastem Composers League (1986), the Madison University Flute Choir Composition Award (1987), and the Queen Sofia prize (1991) for his Virtus for orchestra. A good amount of his pieces have been published by major publishers in Catalonia, France, Spain and the United States.
While continuing his deep interest in composing, Brotons'main activity is conducting. He is a busy guest conductor and he has conducted several orchestras in America as well as in Europe such as the Orquestra Ciutat de Barcelona i Nacional de Catalunya, Orquesta de Radiotelevisión Española, Orquestra del Liceu de Barcelona, Orquesta de Asturias, Joven Orquesta Nacional de España, Tallahassee Symphony, Salem Symphony, Columbia Symphony, Blue Lake Festival Orchestra, etc.. He has conducted and recorded with the recording companies EMI, Gamet and Auvidis. He was selected by the Master Musicians Collective to record one of his orchestral pieces on a CD by the Prague Radio Symphony under his conducting. In the last years he has recorded with the Orquestra Ciutat de Barcelona i Nacional de Catalunya a good number of classic Catalan Spanish composers pieces.
In 1995 he was commissioned to write an orchestra piece to commemorate the 3Oth anniversary of the Orquesta de Radiotelevisión Española. This event was broadcasted on National TV.
He has been the conductor of the Oregon Sinfonietta (1990-1993) as well as the Mittleman Jewish Community Orchestra (1989-1990). Currently, he is the Music Director and Conductor of the Vancouver (WA) Symphony Orchestra, position he has held since 1991. He is also the Music Director and Conductor of the Vallés Symphony Orchestra in his native Barcelona as well as the Orquestra Simfonica of the Balearic islands in Palma de Mallorca.
He has been Associate Professor of Music at Portland State University in Oregon from 1987-1997, where he taught Counterpoint and Music Literature, and conducted the University Orchestra. In the summer he annually teaches at the Summer Music Course of the island of Menorca.
