Blumenthaler studied cello, musical theory and composition in Mannheim and Cologne with Hans Vogt and Jörg Baur, among others. From 1979-87 he was a part-time lecturer for musical theory at the Academie of Music Rhineland, Cologne. In 1989-90 he gave guest lectures at the National Chiao Tung University in Hsinchu,Taiwan; and from 1992 to the present, he lectured on composition and musical theory at the Meistersinger Conservatory of Nuremberg (since 1998 Academie of Music Nuremberg-Augsburg). Since 1993 he has authored broadcast features for “Commentaries on New Music” (SWR Stuttgart, Baden-Baden), and in 1994-95 he conducted workshops for analysis and composition at the National Institut of the Arts in Taipei, Taiwan. In 1997 he gave a guest lecture at the Harvard University on the chamber opera Jason and Medea - Black enshrouds Red. In 1994 and 1998 he was invited to teach at the “Internationale Ferienkurse für Neue Musik” in Darmstadt, Germany. Fellowships and prizes include an invitation in 1982 to the German Academie Villa Massimo in Rome, Italy; in 1987, the Bernd-Alois-Zimmermann scholarship from the City of Cologne; in1982, the award for young composers from the City of Stuttgart; and in 1987, the prize at the “Concours International de Composition Musical Opera & Ballet” in Geneva, Switzerland.
