He studied recorder, cello and piano and, from 1984 – 89, received training in the children’s composition classes of Halle/Saale in the former German Democratic Republic, which also offered him the opportunity of first performances of his earliest pieces. Günther Eisenhardt from Dessau was his teacher at the time.
From 1991 to 1997, Stier was a student of Paul-Heinz Dittrich at the music academy “Hanns Eisler” in Berlin. This was followed by an additional course with Hanspeter Kyburz from 1998 to 2001. His work Double for ensemble (2000/1), which was commissioned by Ensemble Modern, dates from this period – it exemplifies Stier’s characteristic structural style which is based on the ideas of kinetic sculpture.
In the winter semester of 1996/97, Stier was given a teaching assignment in Music Theory and Aural Training at the Academy of Music “Hanns Eisler” in Berlin as part of their youth development programme. From 1998 – 2004 he taught the same subjects as part of his pre-study preparations at the music school Berlin-Mitte.
In the winter semester 2004-05, Sebastian Stier was appointed university lecturer in Music Theory and Analysis at the Academy of Music “Hanns Eisler” in Berlin.
The composer has received various awards and prizes: 1993 Hanns Eisler Prize for Composition; 1997 Busoni-Prize of the Academy of the Arts, Berlin; 2001 Composition Prize of the capital city of Stuttgart; 2002 Stipend for a sojourn to the Cité Internationale des Arts, Paris; 2006 First Prize of the composers’ competition of the 7° Weimarer Frühjahrstage für zeitgenössische Musik.
Commissions include works for the Music Academy Rheinsberg, the Dresden Centre for Contemporary Music, MDR, WDR, Deutschlandfunk, Ensemble Modern, Klangforum Wien, the Stuttgart State Opera and the Konzerthaus Berlin.
Since 2007, his collected works have been published by Edition Juliane Klein.
