A pianist, conductor and composer, Alain Savouret studied at the Paris Conservatory, notably with Elsa Barraine, Marcel Beaufils and Olivier Messiaen. After a training course in the research department of the ORTF, he became head of research (1968-1972) at the GRM (Groupe de Recherches Musicales) and then collaborated with the GMEB (experimental music group of Bourges). A composer of music that is electro-acoustic (Tango, 1971), instrumental (Chant triglotte, 1984) or mixed (Lettre à Miguel de Saavedra,1985), as well as of teaching works (Blanche-Noire et les 24 mains, 1996), his interests lie in sound matter, keyboard virtuosity (Selon, 1970), economy of compositional material as well as in improvisation.
From 1987 he developed the idea of “work mastery”, a long-term musical project with figures from local life and their aural heritage intended for a single performance (Roi Artus, French department of the Landes, 1987; Veillée composée, Auvergne region, 1992). His work also includes the training of instructors as well as many written and oral communications. From 1992 to 2007 he taught at the Paris Conservatory and set up a class for generative improvisation, an experimental and interdisciplinary class. Through all this he has developed a musical approach and practice based on ‘aurality’ (from the Latin auris: ear), in a perspective he calls ‘phonocultural’.
