Sebastian Modarelli studied at the National Conservatory of Music in his native Argentina, earning his degree as salutatorian of his class. His numerous awards include the First Prize in the triennial Composers’ Contest of the National Academy of Arts and the highest prize at the National Composers’ Competition Promociones Musicales. In 2001 he was given scholarships from the Italian government and the Mozarteum Argentino to continue his composition studies in the conservatory “Giuseppe Verdi” in Milan. There, in 2004, he earned his graduate degree in Composition and participated in master classes with composers including Karlheinz Stockhausen, Luis de Pablo and Marco Stroppa.
When he moved to the United States, he discovered an openess rarely found elsewhere which inspired him to pursue his original path of learning from Russian composers, especially Prokofiev, whose harmonic language has fascinated Modarelli and offers him an endless fountain of inspiration.
In 2005 Modarelli moved to Rochester, Minnesota after being offered the position of Music Director and Organist at St. John the Evangelist Church. Since then he has received several commissions and composed mainly organ and chamber music, works for symphonic orchestra, and choral music.
Some of his latest premieres include Born in Buenos Aires, commissioned and premiered by the Metro Chamber Orchestra in New York City in 2010 and performed later by the Rochester Symphony Orchestra in 2012; Variations on Picardy for Oboe and Organ, dedicated to renowned organist Jeff Davis in 2011; William Shakespeare for Choir and Organ, commissioned by the Albert Lea Cantori; and the Duet for Cello and Organ premiered in its full version by the Svyati Duo (London) on May 6 of 2012.

Sebastian Modarelli ha iniziato gli studi musicali presso il Conservatorio Nazionale di Musica in Argentina, ottenendo un importante encomio nella sua classe. Ottiene il Premio triennale per Compositori dall'Accademia Nazionale delle Arti argentina ed il premio Compositori Nazionali Promociones Musicales. Nel 2001 ottenne le borse di studio dal governo italiano ed dal Mozarteum Argentino per continuare i suoi studi di composizione al Conservatorio "Giuseppe Verdi" di Milano. Nel 2004, si laurea in Composizione presso il Conservatorio Verdi e partecipa a varie master class con Karlheinz Stockhausen, Luis il de Pablo e Marco Stroppa, ma quando - nello stesso anno - si trasferì negli Stati Uniti, scoprì che il suo percorso musicale doveva attraversare i compositori russi, specialmente Prokofiev il cui linguaggio ha affascinato Modarelli ed è stato fonte di ispirazione.
Nel 2005 Modarelli si trasferì a Rochester, Minnesota dopo che gli fu offerto l'incarico di Direttore di Musica ed Organista alla Chiesa Evangelista di St. John. Da allora ha ricevuto commissioni di lavori musicali, principalmente per organo e musica di camera, per orchestra sinfonica e musica corale.
